In 1961 folk music was a major component of North American popular music.
Inspired by the first Newport Folk Festival held in 1959, a group
of folk aficionados in Toronto decided to organize a folk festival. At
the first Mariposa all that came before was on stage with what
would come next. Traditional singers accompanied by their folklorist minders
alternated with more commercial interpreters such as Ian and Sylvia.
